Sharp Airlines has today announced the staged return of its passenger and freight schedule of flights between Tasmania and Flinders Island, encouraging Tasmanians to book their next island holiday in their own state.

Tourism operators on the island are delighted to be opening their borders to Tasmanian travellers once again and look forward to welcoming ‘mainland Tasmanians’ to their island home soon.

Regular flights between the Bass Strait Islands and Tasmania have been restricted to essential workers since March when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

The lack of tourism has been felt throughout the island community, which relies heavily on its connection to mainland Tasmania and Victoria.

Sharp Airlines CEO, Dallas Hay, said he was looking forward to seeing the island come alive once again with business and tourist activity.

‘We are proud to be offering regular services to the Bass Strait Islands for residents and travellers again. Sharp has supported our regional communities for many years, and it has been devastating to see that service halted this year.’

‘In line with the State Government’s announcement, we encourage all Tasmanians to get out and enjoy this time that we have our state all to ourselves. These local communities are relying on local tourism to keep them afloat, and there is no better place to escape for a weekend this winter’, said Mr Hay.

Flinders Island is a 35-minute flight from Launceston and is renowned for its natural beauty and wilderness.

To celebrate the return of intrastate travel, Sharp Airlines will be rewarding 10 lucky passengers with a free return flight. Any traveller that books a return flight to or from Flinders Island in the month of July will be in the draw to win.
